Hotel Wailea Hillside Stay

  3. Hotel Wailea Hillside Stay

Hotel Wailea’s hillside setting is a big part of its appeal. Above the busy beachfront resorts, garden paths and ocean views create the feeling of a smaller retreat. The appeal is easy to understand: room to slow down, a quieter garden setting and a different perspective on South Maui.

Hotel Wailea’s hillside setting

Hotel Wailea offers a sweet escape from the bustle of huge resorts. Set on 15 acres with just 72 suites, it feels more intimate than many of the properties down the hill. The sound of waterfalls and streams paired with landscaped gardens made us want to curl up in a robe and sit on a lanai until sunset.

The elevated views look toward the ocean and neighboring islands. Views across the grounds take in Molokini Crater, Kahoʻolawe, Lānaʻi and the West Maui Mountains. The view you’ll have from a particular suite depends on its category and location.

One practical detail matters: this isn’t a beachfront hotel. The hotel’s FAQ describes a hillside location about a five-minute drive from Wailea Beach, with beach transportation for registered guests. If stepping straight from your room onto the sand is your priority, understand that difference before reserving.

For the surrounding beaches, shopping and restaurants, use our Wailea map and area guide.

Open-air design and quiet corners

The property’s Japanese design influences, dark wood, stone and open spaces create an atmosphere that feels calm rather than crowded. Spend some time walking the garden paths and finding a quiet place to sit.

The open-air architecture is part of the experience. Covered gathering areas provide shade without shutting out the breeze or the ocean beyond the gardens.

But this is Maui, and we still recommend exploring the island, even when returning to the hotel is one of the best parts of the day.

Suites: space for two

We like the residential feel of the one-bedroom suites. Separate living space and a furnished lanai made the layout feel more like a small retreat than a conventional hotel room.

The current suite descriptions list 750 square feet, a king bed, separate living area, kitchenette and private lanai or balcony. Overnight occupancy is a maximum of two guests, ages 18 and older.

Current categories include Garden View, Partial Ocean View, Ocean View and Celebration Ocean View suites. Garden View suites are on the ground floor. Ocean View suites can be on either level, while Celebration Ocean View suites are on the top floor. Ask about the category, stairs and route through the property that will suit you.

Each suite has its own design, so furnishings vary. If a particular room feature matters to you, discuss it when choosing a category.

Poolside relaxation

The charm of the pool area is its calm, relaxed atmosphere. We like having a comfortable place to sit and a bar that takes fresh ingredients and handmade cocktails seriously.

The current adults-only pool remains part of the hotel’s guest experience. Ask which cabanas are available without an extra charge and which reserved or upgraded options cost more. A restaurant reservation shouldn’t be treated as permission to use hotel guest amenities.

A poolside drink and an unhurried afternoon can be enough of a plan. For a class or another organized activity, check the hotel’s experience calendar if a class is part of your plans.

Dining with an ocean view

Local, seasonal and fresh are the qualities we look for in a Maui meal. Dining here adds another ingredient: an elevated view over the coast.

The hotel’s dining page lists The Restaurant at Hotel Wailea and The Birdcage Japanese Grill. The Restaurant offers island-inspired dining, while The Birdcage pairs Japanese-influenced dishes with cocktails and ocean views. Check menus and reservations directly.

The Treehouse is now a private dining experience under a canopy of mango trees, with a chef-led dinner and advance reservations.

Although overnight stays and guest amenities are adults-only, the current dining FAQ says guests under 18 may dine at The Restaurant and The Birdcage. Confirm any requirements for a specific reservation.

For another way to enjoy a South Maui evening, consider a Kai Kanani Sunset Cruise. Compare the cruise’s departure time and menu with your dinner plans; it’s a separate outing from the hotel’s dining experiences.

Massage, classes and beach time

If you come to Maui and forget to relax, that’s a sad thing indeed. The streamside setting makes slowing down feel natural. The experience calendar lists in-room spa services, wellness classes and other activities. Confirm appointments, pricing and availability through the hotel.

The current FAQ includes Wailea-area transportation, beach concierge service and selected activities among resort-fee amenities. Dining, spa treatments and some upgraded experiences cost extra. Review the current resort fee and inclusions with your room quote.

Ask the concierge which yoga sessions and canoe outings fit your stay, and leave room for the simplest luxury: an unhurried afternoon.

Weddings and special occasions

The ocean views also made an impression as a setting for weddings and vow renewals. Explore the hotel’s special-event options, then ask about the current venue choices and planning arrangements.

For help planning a celebration, explore Maui Wedding Company and discuss the arrangements you need. For a glimpse of an earlier celebration, see this Hotel Wailea wedding photographed by Natalie Brown.

The hotel allows guests of all ages at weddings and private events, according to its FAQ. That doesn’t change the adults-only overnight policy, so discuss accommodation plans separately if your event includes children.
