A Maui vacation gives you plenty of ways to treat yourself, from beachfront resorts to memorable meals. Something many people don’t consider, however, is the vehicle they’ll drive between those stops. Our Maui Roadsters review looks at a splurge that made the drive itself part of the fun.
Whether you’re here to get married, celebrate a birthday or simply explore, a day in a convertible can feel like a special occasion. With the ocean beside you and the top down, getting there can become the highlight of the day.
Our Maui Roadsters Review: A Different Kind of Rental
While minivans, SUVs and four-door cars are convenient for carting around luggage, beach gear, seventeen kinds of shave ice and the kiddos, Maui Roadsters offers a different experience. Its fleet features professional 1957 Porsche 356 Speedster Convertible reproductions. These are reproductions, rather than original 1957 Porsches.
If you’ve dreamed of channeling your inner James Bond with the top down and the Pacific beside you, you’ll understand the appeal. From personal experience, I can say that I’d never had so much fun driving a car. Getting back into my Toyota Camry was the most challenging part of our outing.
Leah and Chris were helpful and friendly during our visit.
What to Know Before Booking
These are two-seat cars with manual transmissions. Every driver needs to handle a stick shift confidently, including hill starts and reversing. This isn’t the time for a refresher lesson.
The current online options are a half day of up to six hours or a full day of up to 12 hours. The company’s rates page lists other arrangements and delivery charges. Check your final quote before reserving. Unlimited mileage doesn’t mean every road is allowed.
Review the rental requirements before you pay. Drivers must be at least 25 and meet the company’s license, driving and insurance requirements. Arrange coverage directly with the company in advance, especially if you’re visiting from outside the United States.
Pack lightly. These cars have limited storage, and the tops are water-resistant rather than waterproof. Take valuables with you when you park and discuss the weather plan before your day out.
Plan a Route Your Speedster Can Drive
The company’s Maui Roadsters driving restrictions need to guide the route instead. Don’t drive off-road, take the back road between ʻOheʻo and ʻUlupalakua, or head up Crater Road to the Haleakalā summit.
The company also restricts other roads, including the lava fields beyond Mākena and parts of West Maui. Ask the staff to approve your itinerary for the specific car and conditions. Lani, the ivory Speedster, isn’t permitted on the Road to Hāna.
Upcountry’s rolling hills, gardens and views still make an appealing idea for a relaxed outing. Use the company’s route suggestions, leave time for stops, and choose legal parking before taking photos. Respect private property and give residents room to get where they’re going.
Is Maui Roadsters Right for Your Day?
Choose a day and plan an adventure that’s equal in beauty to the car you’ll take along. For two people who enjoy driving a manual, this can be a memorable addition to a honeymoon, birthday or vacation.
