Maui has something for everyone, but it’s not often all in the same place. If your group can’t agree on an outing, visiting Maui Tropical Plantation with kids gives you several options in one Waikapū stop.
Our original Maui Tropical Plantation story celebrated its mix of tours, shopping, food and mountain views. The businesses have changed since that 2019 post, but you can still build a visit around the interests of your own family.

Maui Tropical Plantation With Kids: Start With One Activity
Some people prefer to sit back and enjoy the view without too much exertion. You are on vacation, after all! The Tropical Express offers a narrated ride through the plantation’s fruits and plants.
The plantation currently describes a 40-minute tour with a coconut-husking demonstration. Its official tour page lists departures Tuesday through Sunday between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. Check available tickets for your date before building the rest of your day around it.
For a relaxed family visit, start with the tram, then leave time for a snack and a look around. You don’t have to book every activity on the property to enjoy being here.
Wild Thing: Ziplining for the Adventurous Ones
If someone in your group is craving more excitement, Maui Zipline Company offers five side-by-side lines over the plantation. You’ll get a bird’s-eye view while other members of the group can keep their feet on the ground.
The operator lists children as young as five and a weight range of 45 to 230 pounds. Age alone doesn’t establish eligibility. Read the full participation requirements and ask about the adult-companion rules for your child before reserving.
Plan roughly two to two and a half hours for check-in, training and the tour. Reservations are required according to the operator’s current FAQ. Closed-toe shoes are required, and participants need to manage stairs and some walking.
Our original post included this earlier look at the zipline experience:
Shopper Sally: Bring Home Something From Maui
No need to head straight to a mall to find a souvenir. Our old visit included local jams, wooden bowls, jewelry, soap and freshly roasted coffee. Stock changes, so treat those as memories rather than a shopping list of guaranteed finds.
The plantation’s current shopping and dining directory includes The Country Market, Kumu Cafe and Farm Bar, Mālama Studio, La Casita and Stitch by Stitch. The Country Market brings together Kumu Farms produce and Maui Oma coffee. Individual businesses keep their own hours.
Dig In: Lunch With a Valley View
A meal can make a good meeting point if your group splits up for different activities. The current on-site restaurant is Cafe O’Lei at the Plantation, in the old Mill House location. Check its menu, opening hours and reservations before arriving.
Our 2019 story featured Chef’s Table dinners and the former Mill House Restaurant. We’ve kept those references for readers interested in that earlier dining experience. They don’t describe a current Chef’s Table program or the current restaurant’s menu.
Views from earlier plantation visits: Waikapū Valley above the grounds and pond. Follow current signs and staff guidance around wildlife.
A Slower Visit Around the Grounds
Not everyone needs a zipline or a full schedule. Take a seat, enjoy the tropical setting and look toward the West Maui Mountains. Keep children close around water and let the grounds be part of the outing, rather than something to hurry through.
Our earlier visit also included the Claus locomotive and the Kalākaua Coach. Displays and access can change, so ask staff what’s available when you arrive. Ask staff whether feeding is currently allowed, and follow the signs and guidance around wildlife.
Planning Your Family Stop
Find the plantation at 1670 Honoapiʻilani Highway in Waikapū. Match tour check-in times with your lunch plans, bring what your chosen activity requires and check each business’s schedule. A little room between bookings makes Maui Tropical Plantation with kids a much easier outing.
