The Maui Tropical Plantation zipline makes a fun family outing if everyone meets the riding requirements. Five side-by-side lines, garden views and space for nonriders to watch give your group plenty to enjoy together.

Maui has a ton of options when it comes to outdoor activities. Whether it’s scuba diving, surfing, kayaking, hiking, biking or exploring the landscape on horseback, there’s an option for every kind of traveler. For this outing, we’re focusing on Maui Zipline at the Plantation in Waikapū. You can reach the operator at 808.633.2464.
Maui Tropical Plantation zipline: what to know first
Before you book, check the operator’s current rider requirements. Riders must be at least five years old and weigh between 45 and 230 pounds. Age alone doesn’t determine whether a child can participate.
- Wear closed-toe shoes and clothes suited to a harness.
- Expect walking, stairs and time on your feet. Ask the operator about your group’s mobility needs before booking.
- A parent or legal guardian must check in riders under 18. A parent must accompany children under 10 during the tour.
- Each rider uses their own harness and line. Side-by-side riding doesn’t mean a child rides in a parent’s harness.
- Pregnant guests cannot participate. Discuss other health concerns directly with the operator before reserving.
Allow about two to two and a half hours for check-in, orientation and the tour. Reservations are required; don’t plan on walking up and joining the next departure. Check the tour FAQs for preparation and weather policies.
Five perks of this family zipline outing
1. A convenient Central Maui location
While Maui is a relatively small island, most visitors are surprised at how long it actually takes to travel to different areas. What may seem like a 20-minute drive on a map can take much longer depending on traffic, construction and winding, narrow roadways.
One of the best perks about Maui Zipline is its location at Maui Tropical Plantation, 1670 Honoapiʻilani Highway in Waikapū. Check your route and current traffic rather than counting on the short drive times quoted in older guides. Leave enough time for check-in.
You can also combine the outing with a visit to Wailuku or Maʻalaea. Keep the schedule relaxed so a late lunch or traffic delay doesn’t turn your vacation day into a race.
2. Garden and mountain views
You won’t find many more lush places on Maui than the Maui Tropical Plantation. With the West Maui Mountains as a backdrop, a duck pond, landscaped gardens, gazebos and treehouses, the property is a beautiful view in and of itself.
From the property’s five ziplines, however, you’re in for a real treat. The lines range from 300 to 900 feet long and give you a different perspective on the grounds. Some of the best views come from the lines themselves, assuming you’re not closing your eyes the whole time!
3. Side-by-side lines for families
The five side-by-side lines let you share the experience with a sibling, parent, friend or grandparent. That can make a first zipline outing feel a little less intimidating. You still ride separately, so every participant needs to meet the requirements.
For families considering the Maui Tropical Plantation zipline, the minimum age of five is a useful starting point. Check weight and physical requirements too, and let the guides know if someone feels nervous about heights.

4. Helpful guides and options for nonriders
Everyone was welcoming, patient and helpful during our tour, and helped us feel calm and excited to try it out. That describes our own visit rather than a promise about a particular guide or future departure.
You don’t need prior zipline experience, and riders don’t have to brake by hand. Listen closely to the orientation and let the guides lead the way. If you prefer to pass on the tour, nonriders can walk the grounds and watch from the designated viewing areas.
5. More to explore at the Plantation
Another excellent perk is the opportunity for exploration, both before and after! Take time to walk the grounds, browse the local shops or visit the Kumu Farms stand. The Plantation’s Tropical Express tour is another separately booked option.
Our original review recommended lunch at The Mill House. The restaurant on the property is now Café OʻLei at the Plantation. Check its current opening days and meal service before building lunch or happy hour into your plans.
You can easily spend half a day at the Plantation itself. For a wider look at island courses, see our Maui zipline guide. To reserve this particular tour, visit Maui Zipline or call 808.633.2464, and confirm the latest requirements before booking.
