  3. Ono Farms Tour: Tropical Fruit and Coffee Near Hāna

We were lucky enough to spend part of Labor Day weekend in 2010 at Ono Farms in Hāna, Maui. This organic farm grows all kinds of fantastic things in a lush corner of East Maui. An Ono Farms tour gives fruit lovers a closer look at the place behind those flavors.

What We Loved About Ono Farms

This farm was unlike any we’d visited. Fruit trees and coffee trees seemed to wind around without the tidy rows we expected. It felt like free-range farming. The trees grew in their own shapes, the fruit was plentiful, and the setting made us want to slow down and look more closely.

From what we saw, the farm grew bananas, coconuts, coffee, avocados, ginger, lilikoʻi, star fruit and much more. Those are memories from our visit, rather than a promise of what will be ripe on your tour. Ask about the current harvest if there’s a particular fruit you’d love to try.

What stood out to us was the variety of crops and the chance to see food growing close up. A farm visit adds something to a day in East Maui: you can ask the people growing the fruit about their methods, their harvest and what makes this part of the island suited to those crops.

Booking an Ono Farms Tour Today

ONO Organic Farms is a family-run tropical fruit, coffee and cacao farm in Kīpahulu, beyond Hāna town. Its current fruit adventure page describes private weekday tours by reservation. Don’t arrive expecting to join a public tour without booking.

The farm currently describes a guided outing of about 90 minutes, with fruit sampling and a box of harvested fruit to take along. Its listed party limit is three adults, or two adults and two children. Confirm availability, price, group size and cancellation terms directly before arranging your drive.

Wear shoes suitable for the farm’s sloping terrain. Let the guide lead the tasting and harvesting, and ask about access needs when you reserve. A working farm visit is more enjoyable when you know what the outing involves before you get there.

Coffee, Cacao and Farm Products

We’d heard wonderful things about the coffee before our original visit. Truly ono coffee was part of the appeal, alongside the fresh fruit. Today, check the ONO products page for the current selection and shipping options.

Read the coffee label carefully. The dark roast currently listed is a blend of Hawaiʻi-grown and Peruvian coffee, rather than a bag of 100% Maui-grown beans. The farm also lists roasted cacao beans. Stock and offerings can change, so use the current product description when you order.

Fit the Farm Into Your Hāna Plans

The farm is past Hāna town along the Road to Hāna. Leave enough time for the journey, your reserved visit and the return. Don’t use a short-looking map distance as a promise of a quick drive.

If you’re taking a guided road tour, ask the operator whether a reserved farm visit fits its itinerary before booking both. For a broader look at other agricultural visits around the island, see our Maui farm tour guide.

Mahalo to Ono Farms for having us on that original visit. For today’s tour questions, use the farm’s official website or call or text (484) 844-0934.
